The project of multi-instrumentalist Dan Walters, Here’s The Steeple has developed a reputation for intricate guitar textures and soulful, soaring vocals that warm you up like a good cup of tea.
Sunny days playing games on hot playground tarmac; cosy nights sharing songs with friends and family; afternoons spent picking blackberries and conkers. The songs of Here’s The Steeple draw on all of these and more, showing an equal appreciation for both the grit and beauty contained within the British folk tradition, overlaid with the bittersweetness of modern life in a distinctive North-Eastern voice.
Dan is a vocal proponent of the ‘living tradition’, and plays an active part in the Leeds scene, where he helps to run a local folk club and, as part of the Wild Moon Folk Collective, hosts local and national touring acts at regular gigs. He also regularly runs choirs and singing workshops sharing the songs he’s picked up across his involvement in folk music.
With an impressive live resumé, Here’s The Steeple has received support from Help Musicians and BBC 6 Music, and has been praised by artists including The Unthanks and Josienne Clarke.
Sisyphus Moan
His new album, Sisyphus Moan, is due for release in April 2027, and explores feelings of isolation; mental health struggles and the difficulties of communicating these; and understanding the life trajectory that comes with forging an artistic career in your thirties. Set against a backdrop of rich orchestral arrangements, these thoughts gain voice in conversation with the natural world, lending a comforting arm in the face of uncertainty and solitude.
